Find out more about why Natalie decided to become a piano teacher and the music which has influenced her in our short interview.
Why did you decide to become a piano teacher?
Music has always been a big part of my life, having played the piano for years, I initially pursued a degree in psychology before realising it wasn’t my true passion. Transitioning to Music and Education, I discovered my deep love for music and the fulfilment it brought me. I wanted to share that with other people, hence teaching was a great way to help others discover their joy for music. Music, as an art form, has a profound ability for expression and, as a piano teacher, I aspire to guide my students towards achieving their musical aspirations while helping them discover their passions along the way.
What has been your most rewarding experience as a musician?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being a musician for me has been the culmination of the following experiences. Firstly, mastering a piece both stylistically and technically to the point where the audience can truly appreciate the effort and emotion infused into the music has been immensely gratifying. Hearing friends express that my piano playing served as inspiration for them to pursue their musical journey has been deeply fulfilling. Furthermore, receiving praise from mentors and teachers for my performance in exams or concerts has affirmed my dedication and skill in music. And finally, witnessing a student learn a piece and imbue it with their unique style, playing it beautifully, always has a profound sense of achievement as a teacher and mentor. Each of these rewarding moments contributed to my journey as a music teacher.
What book or film has profoundly affected your perspective on music?
The film that has profoundly influenced my perspective on music is Interstellar, composed by Hans Zimmer. but not only Interstellar, his other films like The Holiday and The Lion King expanded my understanding of music, particularly orchestral compositions. As a classical pianist, I was primarily focused on piano compositions, but Zimmer’s soundtracks introduced me to the depth and complexity of orchestral music. His ability to evoke a wide range of emotions through his compositions is truly remarkable. Interstellar in particular, with its hauntingly beautiful score, demonstrated to me the power of music to transcend narrative boundaries and connect with audiences on a deeply emotional level. All of Zimmer’s works sparked a fascination with film music within me. inspiring me to explore the diverse sounds and instruments that contribute to my musical journey.
