Who is AMEB?
The Australian Music Examinations Board formed in 1918 is a national body with the purpose of providing graded assessments of the achievements of music students.
They offer;
- A qualification that is widely recognised and respected
- The only examination body with formal links to major Australian universities and Ministers for Education
- The most widely-used assessment system for Music, Speech and Drama in Australia
- Assessment from the preliminary to diploma level
- Highly-trained examiners who are specialists in their instrument
- Detailed written reports for practical examinations
- Fresh and accessible syllabuses developed in consultation with teachers, parents and student
When will my music exam be?
The AMEB offers two exam sessions per year, in May and November.
If you choose to do an AMEB music exam through Maxx Music, we will enrol with AMEB on your behalf. AMEB will then assign you a specific date and time within the session that you’ve enrolled for.
Students who wish to take AMEB music exams must be approved BY THEIR TEACHER in order to be enrolled.
We will forward the date, time, and location of your music exam as soon as it has been scheduled by AMEB.
Your results will be returned to Maxx Music.
Can I cancel or reschedule my music exam?
You can cancel and reschedule your music exam by requesting this in writing to us. We will then contact AMEB on your behalf to cancel or reschedule your exam.
Rescheduling your exam incurs an administration fee of 75% of your initial exam fee. Cancelling your exam forfeits your full exam fee.
These fees are imposed by AMEB. Please consider carefully when accepting to do an AMEB music exam within one of their sessions.
It is possible to request certain days when you enrol e.g. Saturdays, however, this is a request, and there is no guarantee that AMEB will be able to fulfil your request.
Do I need an accompanist?
You will need to provide an accompanist, at a cost to you, for all instruments except Piano;
- Violin
- Trumpet
- Cello
- Flute
- Saxophone
- Clarinet
For the following instruments you can choose to use an accompanist or a backing track;
- Voice
- Guitar
- Drums
If you would like help in finding an accompanist, please put this request in writing, via email. We can assist in finding an accompanist or your teacher may be able to accompany you for the exam. Alternatively, you can contact the Accompanists’ Guild of NSW
Can I use photocopies of music in the exam?
AMEB is very strict on this and DO NOT allow photocopies of music in the exam.
Loose sheet music that has been legally purchased and printed from the internet is permitted however we recommend taking these pieces in a display folder to keep the sheets together.
Books must NOT be written on when taken to exams

Who is Rockschool?
- UK based Rockschool specialises in music of the most popular genres in a range of rock, pop, metal and funk styles. They offer syllabuses, exams and qualifications for guitar, bass, drums, vocals, piano, band-based keyboards and bands.
- Rockschool qualifications are internationally recognised with tens of thousands of exams conducted in the UK and around the world.
- Rockschool syllabuses and music exams are delivered in Australia through the AMEB.
Rockschool holds graded music exams in the following instruments:
- Electric guitar
- Acoustic Guitar
- Drums
- Bass
- Piano
- Keyboard
- Vocals
- Ukulele
- Band.
