Meet Gus – Brass and Woodwind teacher

Meet Gus Falero – Brass and Woodwind teacher at Maxx Music

We are very excited to introduce Gus Falero, our new brass and woodwind teacher to our team.  He comes to us with a wealth of knowledge and experience, which he is looking forward to sharing with all his students.

He completed his classical music studies overseas 30 years ago and began his teaching career soon after. During this time, he joined the Uruguayan Air Force Band as a professional musician. He later returned to Australia with his wife and children, teaching at Inmelody Music Academy in Hurstville and working at St Joseph’s College Music Centre for 17 years.

Alongside his teaching, he performed in Jimmy Shaw’s “Shawnuff Swing Band” and various jazz combos around Sydney. When he isn’t at Maxx Music, he currently teaches instrumental lessons and leads band programs at Richard Johnson Anglican College. He also enjoys playing in brass and concert bands on the Central Coast.

Gus Falero - brass and woodwind teacher at Maxx Music Castle Hill Why did you decide to teach music?

I decide to teach because music is my passion and I enjoy helping students to achieve their goals with knowledge and experience that I have learnt through the years.

What has been your most rewarding experience as a musician?

I have played and performed for many years oversees as a musician in an Airforce band visiting different countries but being able to play with my wife and children has been the most rewarding experience.

What are some of the first music pieces you fell in love with?

There are many pieces I love. As a classical player I enjoy the concertos composed by Haydn, Hummel & Neruda. As a Jazz player I enjoy playing all the Jazz Standards and as a Brass band player I love playing Marches & Hymns.

What are your top tips for getting the most out of your practicing?

Include regular practice as a habit in your daily routine and practice slow and precise to play fast and impressive. Most importantly enjoy it and have fun.

Do you have a favourite venue to play at or attend concerts?

One of my favorite venue experiences would have to be performing Carols-on-the-Water with our brass band. It is a yearly tradition where we navigate the waters of St Hubert’s Island while playing Christmas carols aboard a big catamaran boat. The captain, dressed as Santa, steers the boat as we cruise along followed by a parade of other community boats enjoying the festive moment.
